The two main purposes of a music video is purely to promote and publicise the song, by making a promtional music video and letting it be played on various formats such as on TV and on video sharing sites such as YouTube, the artist is not limited geographically and therefore can be exposed to more potential fans worldwide, this potentially increase sales of the song providing the record label who produced the song with more profit. Other reasons for making music video's to help convey the artist's visual style and also give more meaning to song being performed.
Synergy
Music videos exists as only one stand of a multimedia campaign, and is just one way of promoting an artist and the song made. The media industry often has relations made within it such as music industry relating to other types of media such as radio, TV, print media and film. By having these relations between different industries, media products can be promoted much more successfully than if one industry promoted the product on its own.
The song 'It's On Again' by Alicia Keys feat Kendrick Lamar is a great example of where synergy has been established between two media industries using a music video, by including scenes from the movie, this give viewers a sense of what movie is about to fans of the artists. The song's involvement with the movie The Amazing Spider Man 2 helped boost both the popularity of the song and the movie.

Another good example of synergy is the song 'Love Is All Around' by the Scottish band Wet Wet Wet, which was used on the soundtrack of the popular film 4 Weddings and a Funeral. The music video included scenes from the movie as well footage of the band performing the song itself.
A bit brief this Royce - you need more detail and more examples to broaden this out.
