Types Of Music

There are two clear types of artists in the music industry:

Organic Artists

These kind of artists are in the industry because they want to
make music which appeals to them and not purely to make money.

Examples of organic artists are Kanye West, Travis Scott and Big Sean.

Sean Anderson, better known as Big Sean, is an organic American hip hop artist. He started honing his skills of rapping and performing by appearing on weekly radio shows. It was at one of these shows that he met Kanye West, free styled for him and gave him a demo tape. Two years later, he signed to Kanye's major independent label 'GOOD Music'.

After releasing several mix tapes and gaining an internet following, Big Sean released his debut studio album in June 2011 named 'Finally Famous'. He also appeared on the GOOD Music compilation album 'Cruel Summer' and released another mix tape 'Detroit'. He has just released his second studio album 'Hall of Fame', which includes the popular singles 'Guap', 'Fire' and 'Beware'.

Synthetic Artists
This refers to the way 'X Factor', 'American Idol' and other musical talent shows operate in looking for artists.

For this talented artists are scouted using the completion by record labels, who then take the front seat in controlling the type of image they portray and music they make. Making the most profit possible is the goal in this operation. Examples of synthetic artists are Little Mix, The Monkees and One Direction.

Like most synthetic bands, the members of Little Mix did not know each other before being grouped together to form a girl band. They all appeared as solo artists auditioning on The X Factor before initially turn down by the judges at Boot camp. It was then decided by the producers of the show, that when put to together as group that they could shine better than as individual acts. So Little Mix was born, Perrie Edwards, Jesy Nelson, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Jade Thirlwall ended up the X Factor and with that instant fame and legions of fans. Their debut studio album 'DNA', charted in the top 5 in eight countries and their second studio album 'Salute' has sold over 200,000 copies in the UK. As of February 2014, Little Mix have sold over 5 million records worldwide, with over 3 million single sales and 2 million album sales.
